Why more events are being livestreamed

Not everyone who loves you can be in the room. Livestreaming used to be a backup plan. Now it’s often part of the plan from the start, and there are good reasons why.

Getting there costs more than you’d think

A BMO survey this summer found Canadian wedding guests expect to spend about $1,530 to attend a wedding, once travel, accommodation, clothing and gifts are added up. Four in ten said attending friends’ and family weddings is a major source of financial stress, and nearly half of Millennials said the same (BMO, July 2026).

For a lot of people, the choice has been simple: find the money to travel, or miss it. A livestream gives them a third option.

Who it’s for

  • Family overseas or across the country.
  • Grandparents and friends who can’t travel easily.
  • People working a shift, or home with a new baby.
  • Anyone who missed the ferry. (We live on an island. It happens.)

What makes a livestream worth watching

Most event streams disappoint for the same reasons, and none of them are about the camera.

  • Sound. A shaky picture is forgivable. Vows you can’t hear aren’t. Taking the sound straight from the DJ or venue makes the biggest difference of all.
  • Steady phones in the right places. A few angles, planned ahead, beat a dozen phones held up in the aisle.
  • Someone switching. Cutting between angles turns a camera feed into a story.
  • A plan. Everyone knows the running order, their spot and their cues. We fill in an event form and timesheet together, and everyone involved gets a copy.
  • A connection check before doors open. Every camera connects, the sound arrives, and the venue connection holds.

Is it the wave of the future?

Live video keeps growing, and it’s become a normal part of weddings, memorials, concerts and community events. But we don’t think the future is about technology. It’s about who gets included. The best livestream is the one where the technology stays out of the way and the people who couldn’t be there still feel like they were.

That’s what we mean by a global stage creating community: your people, wherever they are, sharing the same moment.

Your day, your people

You choose who’s on your team and who takes part. Children are welcome to be heard, and they’re never shown in anything we publish.
